How often should PPE be replaced?

Nothing lasts forever, and PPE is no exception. Users and businesses should always be mindful of obsolescence when it comes to the PPE they use, and never let it get to the point where its effectiveness is depleted due to age. In this article, we shall explore how PPE obsolescence may be determined, and other factors that wearers and employers need to bear in mind.

Are there regulations governing how often PPE should be replaced?

In Ireland, there isn’t direct legislation governing how often PPE should be replaced by users. However, it is highly recommended that users follow manufacturers’ instructions; under the European Union (Personal Protective Equipment) Regulations 2018, PPE manufacturers are required to give a date of obsolescence, effectively the date from which the PPE is not longer fit for its purposes.

What information should manufacturers supply regarding PPE obsolescence?

While the manufacturer is not required to include the manufacturing date on the product (though many do), they are required to provide information to help the user ascertain a reasonable period of obsolescence. Examples of this information include a maximum service life or a limiting date of use.

Is date the only factor that determines the lifespan of PPE?

Obsolescence is not the only determining factor when it comes to assessing the lifespan of PPE. Naturally, wear and tear will affect this too, and sometimes it’s not always obvious. For example, hi-viz PPE can lose its visibility after a series of wash cycles, and manufacturers will state how many wash cycles a particular hi-viz garment can be put through before it loses its effectiveness and requires replacement.  Even sunlight can affect some PPE, which is why it is not recommended to store plastic-based PPE (e.g., hard hats) in direct sunlight.

Of course, regardless of the PPE’s lifespan, keeping the item in good repair is also vital to ensure its effectiveness, and all PPE should be regularly checked for wear and tear throughout its working life.
